Renaissance Music, Woodwork, and Churches are three interests I hope to share with visitors to my page. In particular it includes quite a lot of Midi versions of Early Music, for you to enjoy. You are free to use any of these Midis as you wish. If you have access to Finale I also have all these pieces in score form, and would be happy literally to “exchange notes” with anyone involved in this kind of music - please E-mail me if interested.
There are also notes, or links, about the other interests, Cycling, and Woodworking.

Who am I?

I’m a retired Civil Servant living with my wife Marion in London. For many years we have been enthusiastic amateurs in the field of Early Music. We both play Recorders and Viols and a great deal of our social life involves consort playing in small groups. As a result I have spent time creating playing parts and scores of a range of pieces from the 15th to 17th centuries. I would be very happy if anyone else can take advantage of this work and obtain similar pleasure from it.

Since our retirement Marion and I have enjoyed cycling. Apart from 4 continental holidays, we cycle regularly each week in the countryside around London. We transport our bicycles by car to a convenient start, and do a circuit of 30-40 miles. Contrary to popular belief there are still plenty of very quiet minor roads within easy reach - and we have over 60 favourite starting points for our circuits!

I have a well equipped workshop for wood. I have made nearly 30 Renaissance or Baroque viols to various designs. It is not unusual for us to have a consort of 5 of my viols playing together - and that is a particular thrill - but other instruments are spread around in a variety of European countries. I also make toys and furniture items for the family and some pictures of projects are shown on my Woodwork page. If anyone would like more information about them please E-Mail me.

CHURCHES AND CYCLING SIGHTS

  CHURCHES

As a result of our cycling we have developed an interest in the architecture and fittings of old churches, and we plan our visits to different parts of England and Wales to include fine examples from different periods.

Here are a few of our favourites.

  Warminghurst - West Sussex

The Holy Sepulchre. 10 miles N of Worthing. A small redundant church in a beautiful remote setting. Box pews. Simple 3-decker pulpit, and unusual 3-arched screen. Hatchments.
  Wenhaston - Suffolk

Large "doom-painting" on wood, which was for centuries whitewashed over.
  Escomb - County Durham

One of the few remaining churches that have changed little since Saxon times.
  Normanton - Rutland

Stands partially submerged on an island in Rutland Water.
  Guimiliau - Finistere, Brittany.

One of the remarkable parish enclosure churches concentrated in tiny villages in this part of France.
  Kilpeck Herefordshire

Amazing Romanesque carving in a small country church
  Shobdon Herefordshire

  1750's Rococo fantasy - almost fairground-like!
  Iffley Oxford

Norman showpiece. The window, by John Piper, is based on the legend that animals speak on the night of the Nativity
